# What does the term “solid” gold or silver mean?

This means that **the entire jewel consists of gold or silver**and this in contrast to the so-called pleet gold (gold-plated) or pleet silver (silver-plated) (also called "*plaque*") jewelry in which there is only a thin layer of silver or gold, respectively, laid over an inferior core. These jewels contain only a minimum of gold or silver are therefore worth much less and also much less durable.
