Due to current energy prices and the increasing attention to renewable energy, more and more people are installing photovoltaic panels on their homes. Apart from the economic, ecological, and aesthetic aspects, there’s another very important question that is occupying more and more people: are PV panels on my home or workplace healthy? Does the radiation from solar panels have negative effects on my health?

How Do Solar Panels Work?
Solar panels or photovoltaic (PV) panels convert sunlight into electricity and they are hot right now. They consist of a series of separate, but interconnected, solar cells that absorb sunlight and convert it into low-voltage direct current electricity.
This direct current cannot be used as such in homes. To make the low voltage from solar panels suitable for the power outlet, an inverter is needed. Therefore, it must be converted to alternating current by one or more inverters.
How Do Inverters for Solar Panels Work?
Inverters for solar panels are devices that convert the direct current produced by panels into 240 Volt alternating current that can be used by household appliances. They are an essential component of any solar energy system.
Are Solar Panels Harmful to Health?
Let’s cut to the chase: the panels and associated inverters are one of the largest and heaviest sources of non-ionizing radiation in your home and these carry health risks. Therefore, they can indeed be harmful to health.
A large number of people experience restless sleep and feelings of fatigue when living in a house with solar panels. This can lead to exhaustion and other health problems.
What Electromagnetic Radiation Do Solar Panels and Inverters Emit?
Solar panels and inverters emit high and low-frequency electromagnetic radiation. This radiation is in the form of waves and is produced when the sun’s energy is converted into electricity. But even when it’s dark, they create a similar electric and magnetic field. The level of the electromagnetic field that solar panels themselves generate remains more or less constant during day and night.
How much Electromagnetic Radiation Do They Emit?
The amount of radiation they produce depends on several factors, including the number of panels, location, method of installation, and the location where the inverters are placed.
The number of panels is directly proportional to the radiation produced: more panels mean more radiation. The location of the panels also plays an important role. If they are installed above a place where you live, work, or even sleep, you will experience much more disturbance than if they were placed on a garage or garden shed.
Most Common Harmful Effects of Electromagnetic Fields from Photovoltaic Installations
Solar panels themselves generate an electromagnetic field – even when it’s dark. But even if they remain below the recommended limit for electric fields, they do have negative health consequences, such as fatigue and sleep problems. Many people experience negative health effects, especially when sleeping under solar panels. Additionally, the harmful (scalar) radiation penetrates from the top floor under the roof to the ground floor or basement.

The most common health problems are headaches, dizziness, nausea, and fatigue. These symptoms are usually caused by electromagnetic fields (EMFs) emitted by the panels. Exposure to EMFs can also cause anxiety, insomnia, and concentration problems. Some people are more sensitive to EMFs than others and may experience these symptoms at lower exposure levels.
Tips to Prevent Health Complaints from Electromagnetic Fields of a PV Installation
- Do not install a PV system on your home! For your health, it is not recommended to place solar panels on your house. You could possibly install them on a separate building that is preferably not attached to the house and in which you do not live, work, or sleep.
- Place the inverter away from areas where you spend a lot of time. So, place them far from the bedroom or living room. Also keep in mind that a 360° field is created around the inverter, so don’t sleep under or above it either. Therefore, put them as far away from the house as possible!
- Only buy certified inverters from known manufacturers and work with reliable installers.
- Neutralize and transform the radiation from the inverters with a Penta Power 220 Tag and the radiation from the PV panels with the Penta Power Home Tags.
